Research
Cal/West Seeds research program is focused on developing Value Through Innovation. Aggressive cutting-edge breeding programs are focused on developing varieties that have the genetic potential to maximize farm profitability. Cal/West was the first private alfalfa breeding program to develop its own in-house biotech lab devoted to forages. Our current investment in biotechnology is focused on developing innovative varieties with enhancements in yield, quality, pest resistance, and stress tolerance.
International Research ProgramsCal/West Seeds international research programs are conducted in key export markets. Research focus is on the development of varieties with improved adaptation and enhanced performance. Local selection enables Cal/West researchers to develop varieties with improved performance and better adaptation to those disease, insect, and/or climatic factors that can not be duplicated or selected for in our U.S. facilities.
US Research LocationsCal/West operates two dedicated Research Facilities including laboratories, greenhouse and growth room facilities to support full pathology, entomology, and nematology programs.
The research conducted at the Woodland California site is focused on breeding semi and non-dormant alfalfa, clovers, sudangrass and safflower. Products developed at this location are generally well adapted to temperate climates around the world. The research work conducted at our West Salem, Wisconsin site is focused on dormant alfalfa and clover breeding. West Salem also serves as the focal point of our forage quality lab and biotech lab.Products developed at this location are generally well adapted to regions that experience cold extended winter conditions.
